HISTORY OF CFDP

In 2003, the Center for Depth Psychology began as a resource for psychotherapy, continuing education, supervision, consultation, psychotherapy resources and various other services to foster our work with the life and depth of the psyche. Primarily, it provided consultation groups for healthcare professionals working from a depth psychological perspective.

The Center for Depth Psychology emerged out of a discussion in a graduate school class in Jungian Analysis. Its founding director is a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Steven Harris, who was the professor of this class where the original idea occurred. Dr. Krishna Tewari, who at the time was Professor of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of California Irvine, graciously funded its original budget. Dr. Eve Maram, MFT, supplied everything from needed mailing support to editorial assistance. Due to the efforts of these founders, the Center began. In the first year, 2003, the CFDP offered two year-long Continuing Education Units (CEU) classes for Licensed Psychologists and Marriage & Family Therapists.

These courses were created to help the participants enjoy a different way of getting their continuing education units (CEU's) from a depth psychology perspective. Attendees read, learn and participate in an ongoing dialogue about their psychotherapeutic work together with other professionals in the field. Participants meet in small monthly study groups and incorporate what they are reading into their ongoing clinical work. These courses are designed for psychotherapists who work with the psychology of the unconscious through depth work in their practices. Further, they were created for therapists to have meaningful experiences of both individual and professional growth. As these classes have been well attended, stimulating and full of energetic discussions, by the end of 2006, the CFDP completed its fourth year of courses of introductory level courses.

As the CFDP continued to grow, the work has involved participants who have invested considerable work with the depth psychology perspective. Groups have been offered for advanced members who have invested years in their own analyses, broadly read in a variety of psychodynamic perspectives, and work with patients from a depth perspective. These consultation groups began in January, 2007.

The consultation groups were discontinued in 2010, as participants branched out into other directions in depth psychology.  Some participants sought further training in analytical psychology, others pursued studies in contemporary psychoanalytic thought and practice, while still others branched out into other pursuits.  Each participant, while not formally meeting, continue to re-visit each other to share their learning.  Thus, while in a hiatus, the process of diverging is only part of a greater whole of learning that continues to be shared.
