Steven M. Harris, PhD

 

ABOUT DR. HARRIS. Dr. Harris received a B.A. in Psychology from Vanguard University, after which he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the United States International University (now Alliant International University), and completed his pre-doctoral training with Friendly Hills Medical Group of La Habra, and Post-doctoral training with Health Group Psychological Services, Inc., of Fullerton, CA.

During his training, Dr. Harris worked with adolescents, eating disorders, adult depression and anxiety, sexual trauma, autism spectrum disorders, and personality disorders.  Dr. Harris also completed training in neuropsychology, and went on to complete his dissertation on subtypes of Attention Deficit Disorders, which would be published in an article (McBurnett, K., Harris, S. M., et al. (1993). Neuropsychological and Physiological Differentiation of Inattention/Overactivity and Aggression/Defiance Symptom Groups. Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, Vol. 22, No. 2, 165-171).

Dr. Harris has a general practice and his emerging specialties (although this list is not exhaustive) include:

Licensed as a Psychologist in the State of California in 1993, Dr. Harris developed his private practice while a Assistant Professor at the California Graduate Institute, the American Behavioral Studies Institute, and briefly with both Vanguard University and the Rosemead School of Professional Psychology.  Dr. Harris primarily taught courses in Psychodynamic, Jungian, psychological and neuropsychological assessment at these schools before retiring from teaching in 2002.

Dr. Harris is currently a Candidate at the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute in Tustin, CA.  Although people present with a variety of issues, Dr. Harris practices primarily from a contemporary relational psychoanalytic perspective.  Dr. Harris also offers psychological and neuropsychological assessment services.

Fees.  After a free initial consultation to determine if a mutual working relationship may be formed, sessions are $175.00 per visit.  At times, fees may be reduced somewhat for certain circumstances (sliding scale). 

Insurance.  Dr. Harris works with insurance in two ways:  1)  The patient pays the fee up front and Dr. Harris provides a superbill to be submitted by the patient to the insurance for whatever their plan reimburses, or; 2) Dr. Harris is contracted with certain insurance companies (e.g., Blue Shield, MHN, United Healthcare) and the patient pays the co-payment and/or deductible as required by Dr. Harris to accept.  Dr. Harris only has a limited number of contracted “slots” in his schedule, due to the greatly reduced fee that the contract with insurance companies provide.  Feel free to contact Dr. Harris regarding the availability of such appointments.

In his clinical work Charlie addresses a wide range of symptoms including anxiety, depression, anger, grief, guilt/shame, adjustment difficulties, relational/marital conflict, parent-child discord, childhood/adolescent arrested development, occupational/career dissatisfaction, identity confusion, family dysfunction, and phase of life difficulties. Charlie enjoys working with a diverse mix of clients including men, women, children/adolescents, couples, and families. Humberto Hernandez, Ph.D.

Dr. Hernandez received his B.A. in psychology from UC Irvine and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Washington State University. He practices from an approach that integrates Humanistic and Interpersonal perspectives. He is honored to hear the personal narratives of his clients and strives to help them find meaning and wellness in their daily lives. His clinical specializations include treatment for anxiety disorders, stress management, depressive disorders, career counseling, and ethnic identity development.
