Sabotage
Having repeated experiences of behaving in ways that threaten the connection of a relationship, and if they continue, can potentially end the relationship. Despite its very negative impact, sabotage surprisingly holds some important clues that can help a person and the relationship. It is very important to explore the roots and current contexts of how sabotaging behaviors occur. This is because sabotage is more complex than it may appear to be. On the surface, sabotage can appear to be irrational and at times, plain crazy! Even for the saboteur, it can be confusing. In fact, for some individuals, sabotage can feel somewhat hard to control, other than somehow it is often unbearable to hold the tension that is ultimately relieved by sabotaging behavior. However, in spite of what appears to be only destructive, often carries some very important clues. By impeding further connection, there can be anxiety around what may happen if further connection occurs. Closeness can even evoke fears that what is desired will elicit abandonment. Many individuals fear being hurt, betrayed, or disappointed if they get closer. Therefore, there often seems to be an important message coming from the sabotage to decode and work with more at a conscious level--the need to feel safe and all that this might entail. I would be glad to meet with you and see what we can do to understand and change parts of your life that sabotage.
